(never home)maker Kitchen Tour

Those of you who follow us on Twitter might already know that we spent a large chunk of yesterday cleaning and organizing our kitchen. I, of course, enjoyed a generous glass of champagne . . . and Stephen a few Green Flash IPAs. We got the job done, and now we'd like to share with you our pretty, clean, organized cooking space.

Here's the main hallway that leads into our kitchen. It's a tight squeeze . . . into a tight room . . . so, as you can see, we don't exactly have a ton of square feet-age in which to cook. But, of course, we manage.

Next, our refrigerator. Ah, how we love her. Since we have so little space . . . we put all our cookbooks on top . . . we also stick up all our randomly printed off recipes and race numbers, etc. Erin over at Domestic Adventure recently posted about fridge fronts, and if you're brave enough, you can share yours, too. Just go check it out on her blog.

Now here's my favorite part of the entire room: the island. OK. I realize it's not really an island, but at one of our old apartments, that's what we used this piece of furniture for (and, I believe, its intended purpose). When we moved into our first place, we realized that we didn't have nearly enough counter space to cook/bake. So, it's now up against the wall, and we use it ALL the time.

In fact, since we use it so much, we decided to add a shelf above to give us added storage for our bulk foods. Stay tuned for a post later in the week about this small project that has completely changed our lives (or something like that -- and for only $18)!

Along with adding the shelf, we organized our entire dry foods cabinet. This took hours and hours . . . but was totally worth it. We started by picking up some cheap-o plastic containers and labels . . . then listened to our own advice about how to store bulk foods, and it was sooo worth it. Just look at all that good stuff!

No kitchen is complete without the oven -- which is, perhaps, the heart of the entire room. Ours gets a workout . . . almost as much as we do. We bought our oven last year and -- though stainless steel is all the rage -- decided to go with white to keep our space looking as open as possible. And saving some $$$ was an added benefit of going this route.

Oh, our dishwasher. Or lack of a dishwasher. We have a plan for this problem, though . . .

And now for a few other shots. Hope you enjoy! Overall, the kitchen is tiny, but efficient -- and we spend most of our time there. How'd we spice our space up on the cheap? First, we slapped some paint on the walls and added a dramatic printed curtain. Would you believe the floor was carpeted when we moved in? Believe it! And learn how we fixed the problem for only $1.99 a square foot!

And since we first posted this tour of our lovely kitchen, it's been published on one of our all-time favorite blogs: The Kitchn. Go check out our kitchen tour post there, and read some more about our style choices.

The kitchen looks fantastically organized! I love the color green on the walls. It really seems bright and airy!

Thanks, Terry. Me too!!! I believe the color is pistachio.

And Erin -- what's cool about that color is that we uncovered that the kitchen was originally this shade back in the 50s. So, we thought it'd be cool to stick with the original stuff :)

It looks soooo nice!! My (very) small kitchen needs a bit of organization as well! But you guys did a great job!!

I'm just wondering. I saw in a couple pictures (pictures 3 and 5) that the stove and the 'island' are very close to the bottom cabinets, do you guys have any trouble accessing those?

Ashley M. January 18, 2010 3:00 PM

Thanks, Nina! And great observation. No. We cannot access the ones by the "island" and have limited access to the ones near the stove. The stove was always that way. The island area wasn't -- but we decided it was better to go for counter space than storage (we have a nearby closet where we stash stuff). One of our projects this year is to convert our closet to more counter space, storage, dishwasher, etc. So, we're working on it :)

Your kitchen is filled with so much natural light and the colors you chose just enhances the brightness. I think you did an incredible job with organizing everything. I am trying to move over to keep all dry and bulk food in containers but I have not been as successful as you.

I am curious as to the silver metal kitchen apparatus above the island on the right side of the shelf. What is that? Also in a lot of your food photos I have noticed the blue plates that are in your drying rack, are they fiestaware?

PS Love your kitties they are simply gorgeous!

Ashley M. January 18, 2010 3:55 PM

Nicole -- Thanks for your kind words! That kitchen apparatus -- at least I think -- is a meat grinder. We found it at a Salvation Army. Thought it looked cool. And would also be ironic. You're also right -- those are indeed Fiestaware plates. I was fortunate enough to get a ton of plates, bowls, cups, pitchers in various colors for gifts at my shower, our wedding, birthdays, etc. :)

I have been looking for a fruit-bowl-thing like yours for ages! Where did you get it?

I love how bright your kitchen is.

Ashley M. January 18, 2010 6:42 PM

notethetrees -- I think we got the metal part at target last year. And the bowls/plate are Fiestaware. Hope that helps!

I really enjoy the bold colours you have with your dishes/pots and pans! Beautiful and bright space!

ha! Officially jealous of your fridge :D Okay, and your overall kitchen. It looks so cozy! Mine is just too tiny, I wish I could cook in a kitchen like this one.

stephchows January 19, 2010 7:44 AM

ok... question... how do you get into the draws and cabinets next to the island??

Ashley M. January 19, 2010 8:55 AM

Thanks, everyone, for your comments about color. I love color -- and it's especially fun to play with it in the kitchen!

Rae -- it's hard to believe people have smaller kitchens than we do. But I know it's true! Just spiff it up so it makes you happy. This could be as small as buying a new kitchen towel (Urban Outfitters have some fun ones) . . . or changing a light fixture.

Steph -- see my comment (in reply to Nina) above. We don't really get into them . . . but it was worth it for the extra counter space.

I LOVE that curtain right outside of your kitchen! Is that Amy Butler fabric?
What color is your kitchen? Its lovely!

Ashley M. January 19, 2010 1:16 PM

Hi, LG! The color is "Arbor Vine" by Freshaire (it's a no-VOC paint). And you're right! That curtain is Amy Butler Fabric. I'll have to post the links to the posts with all this information. Thanks for reminding me!

Elise January 19, 2010 8:12 PM

We're having work done in the kitchen right now and I think I'll keep your pictures for reference when the time comes to redecorate!

Can you tell me where you found your island?

Ashley M. February 15, 2010 3:07 PM

hi, anon. actually it was at k-mart on clearance several years ago (from their martha stewart collection). they might still have something like it. :) hope that helps. no one can believe it was from k-mart!

Kitchen looks great, I'm jealous.
I'm interested in hearing about the two storage things you have to the left of the stove - one looks like it has wheels. Are they built ins? Where did you get them? I have a 30 x 30 corner and I can't find the right thing for it. The small island with the drawers (more like cupboard on wheels) looks perfect but I'm intrigued by the stainless steel on the item behind it.

Caroline @ youngDCliving June 2, 2010 10:19 PM

I have to ask, what kind of cat is that?? He/she is adorable! I never thought to store cookbooks and things above the fridge but like the idea! And that island looks very cute and practical :)

Melinda June 4, 2010 7:37 AM

Your kitchen is so cute- I love it! My husband and I are in the middle of a remodel ourselves- it was the kitchen last year, the bathroom this year. I love your house!

Gorgeous kitchen! We have a galley kitchen with even less space than you guys, so it's helpful to see such an efficient use of space! I kinda like small kitchens; they're cozy. (I do look forward to more space someday, though!)

I have that same Le Creuset kettle, but mine's green! :)

Such a cute apartment - love your race #'s on the fridge :)
