Vegan Shamrock Shakes

I'm going to start out this post with a confession: I've never actually consumed an entire McDonald's Shamrock Shake. Blame it on my early lean toward vegetarianism -- which kept me out of the golden arches chain after age 12. Or just my own elitism. Yeah. I'm a food snob. We all have our things.

I've sipped, though. So I get the crush everyone seems to have on this frosty treat. But at over 600 calories per 16 ounce serving (but who's counting calories?) . . . and all that fat . . . I just don't think it's worth the indulgence. Until now!

We made our own shakes this weekend after attending our city's super early St. Patrick's Day parade. But we made 'em vegan -- so less fat and guilt. And they taste amazing. Minty, refreshing . . . and you don't need to find yourself green with envy. You can make the shake, too!

What you'll need . . . (for four hefty servings)
  • 8 large scoops vanilla soy or rice ice cream
  • 2 cups regular or vanilla soy or rice milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 3 to 4 drops green food coloring

Method . . .
  1. Put all ingredients in a blender.
  2. Blend. Add more milk substitute or ice cream to achieve desired consistency.
  3. Enjoy. And add some chocolate syrup if you wish.

I don't think I have ever even tasted a shamrock shake, but I love mint and I love milkshakes so this looks YUMMY.

I have a question for you--and I guess I should have asked it when you wrote the post inviting people to ask questions--but what can I say, I'm slow. Anyhoo, what made you decide to become a vegetarian at the age of 12?

Hey, Elizabeth! I became vegetarian for a variety of reasons. But I have always hated meat. I always spit it out when I was a baby. So, there's really no magic reason. I just don't like it. And, of course, as I've advanced in age -- I've discovered it's healthier and friendlier to eat veggie.

:)

Interesting! Thanks for sharing. I have many more questions about this...but maybe I will e-mail you (or save them for another post) since this line of questioning has nothing to do with yummy green mint milk shakes and I have to get back to work :-) btw, let me know how your long run went!

I've never had a shamrock shake either, but I'm not sure I'll need to once I try this!

This looks WAY better than those McDonald's Shamrock Shakes. First of all they have tons of HFCS in them and they're so disgusting. I tried one because my company brought them for a "snack" and I had a few sips and they gave me the shakes from all the sugar. I totally will try your shake for St. Patty's this year! Yum!

Thanks everyone. And Amanda -- yeah. These aren't super sugary. Just really refreshing. :)

Food does not have morals. Food does not have guilt. Assigning guilt to foods is ridiculous.

Eat what you want. When you want. And trust your body.

Jacinda -- I do agree with you. Very much so. I guess I'm just trying to offer a healthier alternative, and my lingo got a little out there. Whatever.

I made these last night, but subbed about 1/4 of an avocado for the green food coloring - so delicious! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
